I'm Not Ready To Be A 'Mum'

Something diabolical has happened.

Little O has started calling me 'Mum'.

I know it's not like he's started calling me 'Homer' or anything but still - I'm 'Mummy' not 'Mum'.

Mums have school age children and make packed lunches and arrange sleepovers. I still have all those things yet to come. I'm not there yet. I'm not ready to be a Mum.

I'm just fine here in my happy 'Mummy' space. This is the place where laces are a thing of the future. This is where the cuddles are voluntary and kisses are requested. This is where I can be a dinosaur or a monster or an aeroplane and where we play the 'slippy floor' game.

Mums don't do that, do they? Mums are proper grown-ups, right? Mums know how to sew stuff back together and how to keep food fresh for longer, and where all the best sales are (and when). Mums confiscate phones and make full use of all the hoover attachments.

I'm still a Mum-in-training. I've still got a lot to learn.

Plus, to really rub salt in the wound, Baby R is still refusing to say 'Mummy' despite uttering his first word months ago.

Instead, I am 'Daddy'. Daddy is also 'Daddy'. Little O is too holy to be named and shall be idolised and revered forever more.

Baby R actually has quite a decent vocal repertoire for an 18 month old boy. His vocabulary includes 'bubbles', 'socks', 'cheese', 'drink', 'spoon', 'ball', 'hello', 'cuddle', and 'here you go'. So, you see, he's not doing badly.

He just won't say MUMMY!

I actually tried just a minute ago to get him to repeat after me. It didn't go well:

ME: "Say Mummy, Baby, say Mummy. Mum-my."

R: [Smiles like he understands]

ME: "Mum-my. Mum-my."

R: "Football."

To be fair, he may have said 'apple' or 'football', I'm not 100% sure. Either way, IT WASN'T MUMMY, WAS IT.

Maybe the problem is me. A mum would probably take it on the shoulder and go make a sandwich.

Me? I'm going to sulk. So there.

  1. Little R is road testing 'mum' and 'dad' this week too. I hate it. I'm in no way ready to be mum yet. Though it's slightly preferable to her other attempt to start calling me 'Aunty Laura' after hearing it from her cousins this week. Ummmmmm....I think you'll find I'm your mother actually.

  2. Aarrgh I feel you. This is my worst part of the kids growing up. I miss being mummy...she's ok to make mistakes and forget stuff!!! Though with me being so ditzy I do seem to have transferred this to mum life too!!

  4. Aww bless you. L sometimes calls me Briony which makes me want to weep. Though it's better that when he refers to me as stinky mummy. He's a hound though.

  8. This really resonates with me. I really want to be mummy for quite a while yet. It annoys me if we watch Topsy and Tim that they say Mum x Great post x

  9. I totally know what you mean! Occasionally L calls me "Mum" and I correct him straight away! It sounds too old for a three year old!!! Luckily Daddy gets "Dad" sometimes too and I correct him but my hubby doesn't seem as bothered #TriumphantTales

  10. Oh, bless you. I am certain that he will be calling it you soon. Sometimes I think I hear 'MUMMY!!!' too much, but then I remind myself that he won't call me it forever! :) Thanks for joining in with #TriumphantTales, hope to see you again Tuesday.

  11. Oh no haha that's definitely testing you! - My 6y/o daughter still calls us mummy/daddy but sometimes she just says "mum/dad" and really takes me off guard! It'll come :) I'm nowhere near ready to be "mum" - I can just about get everyone up and dressed in the morning lol! #blogstravaganza

  12. My oldest has started saying mum and it cuts each time. I can't handle him growing up. My little girl only calls Mumma when I leave the room or she wants feeding. I've come to accept that this will always be the way. Instead she just screams Lola (our cat) #Blogstravaganza

  14. Our little one went through a stage of calling me "dad" a while back.
Thankfully she switched back to daddy after a while - maybe she worked out what got a warmer reaction or something.

  15. Oh wow I feel you honey! I heard my littlest tell her new friend at playgroup that I was her mum. I nearly had to look over my shoulder to see who she was talking about. I mean surely there must have been a middle aged woman with baby wipes and spare socks standing behind me? Great post. Thank you for linking to #DreamTeam x

  16. Haha my toddler has just started calling me mum sometimes but i think it's because it's in some books, so I'm now reading everything as mum as mummy - as I too am not ready for this stage! #thesatsesh

  18. Remember the first time my eldest called me mum - I think I visibly shuddered. He's six now and I'm ok with being his mum (though I'm still not quite there with my 5 and 2 year old daughters). Thanks for linking up to #Thesatsesh

  19. I think I will sulk too when this happens! I remember my older sister bemoaning the fact that her eldest was calling her 'Mum' and I thought nothing of it (I didn't have kids at the time) and now I feel like my heart may break when I no longer hear 'Mummy' and hear 'Mum' instead! Why do we get so emotional when we become parents?! xx #thesatsesh
