3 Things You Have to Respect About Toddlers

It's hard being a toddler, both for the toddlers themselves and the parents. All those emotions and all that energy coursing around one tiny little uncoordinated body. It's a tough job working out how to express it all. Who can blame them when it all gets a bit much?

That's what my rational, caffeine-boosted brain reasons anyway.

At half five in the morning, pre-coffee, with (someone's) drool smeared across my face and a three-year old running around the bedroom singing 'Happy Birthday' (when it's not even my birthday), I might be inclined towards a different opinion.

Like it or not though, sometimes, despite whatever craziness is ensuing, I want to proffer the mightiest high-five to all the toddlers out there.

Here's why I think they deserve our respect:

1. They Know What They Want

Oh, don't they just.

Last night, all Hell nearly broke loose because Little O's drink wasn't waiting on the side of the bath as he brushed his teeth. And we all know how particular most toddlers are when it comes to food. Yikes.

But at least they know their own minds. They're making decisions and they're sticking with those decisions. Even if it causes chaos for us parents.

Life would be so much easier if we knew exactly what we wanted. I still didn't properly know what I wanted to do with my life when I finished university at the age of 21.

Butcher? Baker? Microchip-maker? Keep that resolve, kiddos - it's a wonderful thing.

2. They Are Persistent

Oh man, are they persistent.

They will reach that biscuit jar. They will get those welly boots on. They will try their hardest to get that second helping of ice cream. But if something's worth getting, why let a small thing like indigestion get in your way?

My favourite example of this is when a jigsaw piece is being particularly troublesome or he's figuring out the perfect train track configuration.Because that's when his tongue appears, poking out of the side of his mouth.

Persistence is a good trait to have, little one. Hold onto it, it will take you far.

3. They Don't Bull**it

If I ask my hubby S if a top looks OK, I get:

"It's alright."

If I ask if it's too dressy, I'm met with:

"It's alright."

Trying a different tack and asking if it's not dressy enough, I hear:

"It's alright."

I swear, I can't tell if it's disinterest or diplomacy.

Little O, on the other hand, gaily sings "Mummy's belly, wobbly jelly" with such gusto, I'm under no illusion what he thinks.

I don't really mind. He's happy and this belly has served me well. Saying that, when he sings it in the middle of Tesco aisle 3, I have to admit I'm less than impressed.

Toddlerdom is such a blessed thing. I reckon the world would be a better place if us adults were a bit more 'toddler'.
